Background
In 2009, over 100 youth leaders gathered from across Providence to discuss how youth can work together to create community change. On that day Y4C unveiled Providence's first Youth Bill of Rights (YBoR). The document covers eight issues, one being the Right to Transportation.
Currently transportation is not provided for students who live within a 3 miles radius of their school. Many students must buy a $62 bus pass every month just to get to school. We find this unreasonable.
Campaign Goal
Y4C’s Transportation 4 Education campaign aims to decrease student barriers to attending school. Through a process of research, community building and developing concrete demands, the youth-driven alliance will make lasting change for Providence youth.
Y4C is dedicated to obtaining free monthly bus passes for all Providence public high school students who live more than one walking mile from their school. Y4C seeks to partner with the City of Providence, Providence Public School Department, and RIPTA to leverage creative funding for this education investment. Creative funding will include financial support from universities, businesses and foundation partners.
