Providence Mayoral Candidate Profiles

Link with Steven Costantino

Steven Costantino grew up in Providence. His grandparents immigrated to America from Italy in a pursuit of the American Dream. In 1975, Steven graduated from La Salle Academy and later went on to graduate from Providence College in 1979 earning a Bachelors degree in Psychology.

Costantino picture Steven has obtained various jobs throughout the city. He had a managerial position at Venda Ravioli, Inc., and was also a Health Consultant.  In 1994  he was elected as a RI State Representative for District 8 in Providence.  He has recently served as the chair of the House Committee on Finance.  He has been involved in a number of community organizations such as the West Broadway Neighborhood Association, the Federal Hill Commerce Association, and the Federal Hill Community Coalition.  He also used to be a board member for the International Institute.  His campaign highlights the following issues: jobs, education, fiscal health, public safety, and city services. 

Get to Know John Lombardi

John Lombardi was born in Providence and raised in the De Pasquale area. When he lost his parents at a young age, John was left to raise his younger brother Frank. He managed to put himself through school graduating from Mount Pleasant with class of 1970. In 1975 he earned his Bachelors in Secondary Education and his Masters in 1982 at Rhode Island College. He earned his law degree in 1987 when he graduated from Suffolk University College of Law. John has obtained many jobs. He was a Social studies teacher at Notre Dame High School in Central Falls, a substitute in the Providence Public Schools, and used to be the director of the Providence Recreation Department.

He has represented Ward 13 on city council since 1984 and served as City Council President from 1999-2006.  He also served as an interim mayor for 4 months from September 6, 2002 – January 6, 2003 after Mayor Cianci was removed from office.  Lombardi describes himself as “socially liberal and fiscally conservative” and his philosophy is: “Give back. Speak up.  Open doors.  Be brave.  Play fair.”

John is a martial arts expert and his favorite animals are big cats like jaguars and leopards.


Find Out About Jonathan Scott

Jonathan Scott, who is nationally recognized as a sailing, football, wrestling and lacrosse coach, was born in 1966 to a single mother in Providence, RI. Scott attended the Moses Brown School from elementary school to high school, and he later attended the University of Rhode Island, where he was the chair of the Student Senate.

Before pursuing politics, Jon was a counselor and group home manager at Whitmarsh House in Providence, where he worked with male youth. His campaign is focused on the following issues: education, economy, jobs, and industry, environment and transportation, and unions and union contracts.

Fun Facts!

Jon is a professional sailor and has completed 10 Newport Bermuda races, which is 635 miles across the open ocean, and he loves brownies. 


Connect with Angel Taveras

Angel Taveras has been a Providence resident his entire life. He grew up in South Providence where he started Head Start and later entered the Providence Public Schools. He attended Classical High School and graduated from Harvard University with honors. He then went on to graduate from Georgetown University receiving a degree in Law. Angel has obtained various jobs. He was a lawyer at Brown Rudnick, started his own business: Taveras Law, and was an associate judge in the Providence housing court. angel taveras pic He has been involved with Green Fellowship, International Institute, Leadership RI, the National Advisory Board of Genesis Stars, and was a founding board member of New Urban Arts.  Angel now resides on Elmcroft St in Mount Pleasant.

His campaign website has information on important issues such as: creating jobs and growing the Providence economy, education, improving city services, fighting corruption, housing, police and public safety, transit, the environment, and arts and culture.

Fun Facts!

Angel’s favorite baseball team is the Red Sox, duh!  One of his favorite artists is Alicia Keys and he loves chocolate cake.

Meet Christopher Young

Christopher Young was born and raised on Daboll St in South Side Providence. At the age of six, Christopher lost his father who served in the US army during World War II. He later lost his mother at the age of ten. As a child Chris attended Saint Michael’s and Bishop McVinney. He later went on the graduate from Classical High School in 1986. He attended Northeastern University and the University of Rhode Island and graduated with an Electrical Engineering degree. He has held many different professional jobs such as media consultant, filmmaker, and founder of Narragansett Solar, Wind and Alternative Energy (NSWAE). Chris is the national director of the National Civil Rights Coalition (NCRC). He once fasted for 28 days to bring attention to the fact that 28% of RI's children go to bed hungry. Chris's major campaign issues include: job creation, housing, lowering taxes, improving education, election reform, and public safety.

Chris is familiar with many different Providence neighborhoods, as he has lived in about twenty different addresses throughout the city of Providence in his lifetime.
