Youth 4 Change

Report Card Results & Methodology

On August 12, 2010 the Youth 4 Change Alliance (Y4C) hosted Providence’s first-ever youth-led mayoral candidates forum.  At this forum, candidates were challenged to answer questions about youth issues.  All six questions were derived from Y4C’s Youth Bill of Rights ranging in topics from community policing to school reform efforts.  Each candidate had ninety seconds to answer each question. The active role the audience played in evaluating the candidates’ responses made this forum original.

At the beginning of the forum we gave the audience an information packet that included the agenda of the event, report cards and three colored cards; red, yellow, and green. The audience used these cards to judge the candidates on their response to each question. Each colored card indicated something different. Green meant they agreed with the candidates’ response.  Yellow indicated that they were neutral. And red meant that they disagreed with the answer.

Then, the tables were turned at the forum: youth became teachers and mayoral-hopefuls became students vying for good marks.  Using the Mayoral Candidates Report Card that each audience member was given at the start of the forum, people were asked to grade each candidate’s answer using an A through F grade-key; A meaning “I strongly agree with the candidate’s response” and F meaning “I strongly disagree with the candidate’s response.”

At the end of the event over 80 report cards were turned in for tallying.  Y4C created a grading system where letters were converted into numbers.  The highest mark, A+, translated to a 4.0  (A=3.8, A-=3.6…) and the lowest, F, was calculated as a 1.6.  Each candidate received individual grades for each question asked and a final overall grade averaging the individual question grades together.
